The Vellum Building

A refurbishment of a derelict warehouse in Bermondsey into a suite of contemporary offices.

The concept was to create a contemporary commercial office environment that would enhance the character and significance of the existing warehouse.

A new staircase was designed and installed to all levels in galvanized metal to enhance the industrial aesthetic of the building.

Each floor level is an individual office unit and is marked by a vertical glass aperture that allows small glimpses of activity within each space. This visual device allows a community spirit to evolve between the separate office environment’s.

The project was the first by the practice to be designed, managed and completed directly for the client. This option evolved after a lengthy tender pricing exercise where the resulting cost was prohibitive to the client. The final cost was reduced by a quarter by the direct management of the construction by the practice.
